The Hobbit Sequel Desolation of Smaug Did Not Attract More Viewers

An action packed The Hobbit : Desolation of Smaug racked up  $73.6 million in its opening weekend, lower than the first installment which earned $84.6 million in December 2012.  It did not attract more viewers even with  comical scenes from the dwarves and additional characters Tauriel and Legolas ( who were not in the original book by Tolkien ).

Purists have heavily criticized Peter Jackson's decision to add the two characters just to expand the story into a trilogy. Many has questioned New Line Cinema's  change of its original two-film plan.

For a devoted like me, I am still attracted to see these films even if it may appear the story is stretched. For many others, however, they became more selective and decided to pass.

What do you think of The Hobbit : Desolation of Smaug ? Was it a let down?
